Logging in to Unix
To log in to a Unix computer locally (when you are sitting in front of it) is
no different than logging in Windows. Enter your user name (e.g. c04abc) followed by
"enter". Then enter your password and press "enter" again.
After a short while you should see a desktop in front of you with a couple of icons
and a clock in the right upper corner. A file manager with your home directory
should be somewhere in the middle and a terminal window (black background and
c04abc ~/). You are now logged in to a Unix system.
The graphical user interface is called X and just like in Windows you use the mouse
to start programs and use menus etc. You can click some icons close to the clock
to start them (the web browser for example). By clicking the different mouse
buttons at the desktop you will access different menus.
