Day 28

I got up early today after a really good nights sleep. I packed all my gear and was ready to go before they opened the camping reception so I took a stroll along the lake. Very peaceful to walk there in the morning when nobody is around, look at the birds, and reminisce about the journey. When I got back to the reception they had opened so I gave them the key and started the last days ride.

I almost didn't notice the ride, I was in a kind of happy delirium. Felt very nice to see all the villages and sights along the way and recognize them from when I passed them on the first day. Saw a few cyclists out exercising on their racers and I enthusiastically waved hello to them.

In the early afternoon I reached my apartment and unloaded the bike for the last time this trip, a bittersweet experience to say the least. Oh well, there is always next year.

Day 27

Plaque next to the road: The treasure can be found where the bridges meet.
Made good progress in the first half of the day but I had to change my route plan a little due to the motorway (again). I could continue in the correct general direction though. Around lunch I reached the village of Gottne which I also passed on my way south and from Gottne I'll backtrack the route I followed then. I bought some food there and continued on my way. I soon found myself on all to familiar dirt roads.

I decided to spend the night at the camping site in Trehörningsjö. Having a shower and eating some lasagna at the restaurant was very nice.

Tomorrow I'll reach Umeå and thereby finish this trip.

Day 26

It's difficult getting around by bicycle in the north eastern areas of Sweden, the big problem is the motorway that runs along the coast. Many times it seems like it's the only road that runs between nearby towns. Two times today I had to take long detours because of this. Fortunately they took me through some beautiful areas and I enjoyed myself. The area is called the High Coast and the many climbs and descents make for hard cycling and pretty sights. I wanted to ride across the High Coast Bridge but you weren't allows to cycle across it so I had to go further north and ride across the Sandö bridge.

I ended the day with a big climb and set up camp a few kilometers past Gålsjö Bruk.

Day 25

A very hilly day. Up and down all the time. I also had very little water for the first half of the day which was annoying. On one of the downhills in pretty much the middle of nowhere I saw a cyclist leading his bike ahead of me—it was a very nice racer by the way. I got curious about why he was walking so I stopped and he explained that his chain had broken. I had a spare chain with me so we tried to put it on but I guess neither of us were good bike mechanics to we managed to screw it all up. Fortunately he had called for help and they arrived to drive him home. I was pretty annoyed with myself since I really should have been able to do something like that blindfolded. I'm definately going to take my bike completely apart and (hopefully) get it together again before my next trip since I wouldn't like to be stuck several days walk away from the next bicycle shop due to some stupid mistake.

By the way, the flies that hitch-hike on my bike and bags really annoy me. Damn freeloaders!

Except those things it was a good day :-)

Day 24

Today I encountered the first longer climb on my return trip. It was a few kilometers of fairly steep ascent. Got up to the top without any problems though, the worst part was going down the other side since the road was very bumpy there, I kind of hung on to the bike best I could and hoped that all would go well. Not a whole lot else happened during the day, two showers in the afternoon and a nice day overall. It's starting to feel like I'm getting close to home.

In the evening I started to look for possible camp sites, the first one was pretty nice but had an abundance of really annoying mosquitoes. I continued a few kilometers more and found another possible site but there wasn't any nice place to put up the tent. Another few kilometers down the road I found a good place hidden away just a few meters away from the road, there was no heavy traffic so I figured that I wouldn't have any problems sleeping—I can always use my earplugs if it gets noisy. Ate dinner (rice, sausages and bread) and went to sleep.

Distance: 145.4km | Ride time: 7:06 | Average speed: 20.54kph | Max speed: 58.7kph | Odometer: 2995km

Day 23

A rather ordinary day with a few light showers. Found a really nice camping site with plenty of blueberries and almost no mosquitoes at all. I soon fell asleep with a belly full of berries and blue spots all over me.

Distance: 138.94km | Ride time: 6:55 | Average speed: 20.24kph | Max speed: 49.6kph | Odometer: 2849km

Day 22

Today I planned to ride to Fagersta and rest up at the camping site there, for some reason it didn't look very interesting to me though and I continued riding another 10–15 km until I came to Norberg and their camping site. It seemed quite nice so I checked in, the price was a pleasant surprise. It was very nice to have a proper shower and be able to wash my clothes. Letting the clothes lie on the tent to dry I went into the town and bought some food and checked my mail at the library.

The rest of the day I enjoyed the weather and rested up for the rest of the trip.

Distance: 66.72km | Ride time: 3:23 | Average speed: 19.88kph | Max speed: 50.5kph | Odometer: 2710km

Day 21

Woke up well rested, having a layer of moss under the tent makes me a happy camper. Despite being well rested, I'll take a rest day tomorrow. During the day I passed through Örebro. Remembering the problems I had in Linköping yesterday I was a bit worried about getting out of there smoothly but everything went well and I was able to cover quite some distance before giving up for the day.

I did have some trouble finding a camping spot though, eventually I settled for a less than perfect place. I didn't care for it due to the number of mosquitoes and especially the weird green insects that were everywhere. They looked just like the seed pods of a particular type of plant that grew in the grass.

Distance: 164.74km | Ride time: 8:07 | Average speed: 20.48kph | Max speed: 49.8kph | Odometer: 2644km

Day 20

Woke up inside a subwoofer at 04:30, the rain pounding on the tent caused an incredible roaring sound. In the distance I could hear thunder and I saw the tent roof slowly slumping towards me. Not a good situation! I pushed upward on the roof and got rid most of the water that had collected since the rain started. This also prompted a great debate, should I go out to try to push the tent pegs down further—they had obviously started to slip—or should I stay inside the nice and dry tent and keep pushing up on the roof to make the water slide off? I chose the latter (obviously!) and kept pushing for a while but the tent kept on drooping so I had to force myself to put on some rain gear and go out and fix the pegs. Now, my tent is not supposed to look like a banana when pitched but it definately had a banana like appearance at that moment. I desperately tried to push down the pegs but the top soil was slurry and below it was rock hard soil (probably rock). I did manage to put them down enough to keep the tent up though but had to keep pushing the roof up from the inside to get rid of excess water.

I tried to get a little rest before I had to break camp and be on my way but it was hard with the loud roaring. After an hour or so it started to let up a bit and I ran out to pee, while standing a bit from the tent minding my business there was a bright flash behind me. It was strong enough to cause distinct shadows on the ground. I swung around and saw sparks flying from the power wire pole standing about 50 meters away and just then came the thunder! A humbling experience. I jumped into the tent rather quickly and spent the rest of the morning inside the sleeping bag occasionally pushing on the roof.

Top item on my "must have" list for my next tent: Must be able to stand securely without pegs.

Eventually I got on my way and came to Linköping after lunch. It was easy to get there but I had serious problems getting out. The only way I could find was the motorway but those are off limits for bicycles. While standing next to the motorway onramp—closely examining my map and GPS—a car stopped and the guy asked me where I was heading. I said that I was trying to find a way out to the north west and was having some problems. He pointed towards a building site with half finished bridges and stuff and said that I should go through there, "yeah, right" I though, it definately didn't look like you were expected to ride there. He seemed quite sure of it so I thanked him and took of in the direction he pointed. I didn't dare ride for long though, the ground was covered by large sharp gravel and planks with nails sticking out of them. Thankfully, I suddenly ended up on a nice bicycle road and could continue on at a fairly nice speed. They sure don't make it easy to leave Linköping.

Distance: 130.78km | Ride time: 7:07 | Average speed: 18.53kph | Max speed: 51.2kph | Odometer: 2479km
July 22, 2005

Day 19

A day similar to yesterday, the rain comes and goes which is annoying since I have to put on and take of the rain gear over and over. I'd much rather ride through a long heavy shower and get it all over with right away. But I assume that's not for me to decide. I did get a number of encouraging—at least that's how I choose to interpret it—honking from passing cars when climbing the various hills that laid in my path.

Remember my problems with the tubes? I finally bought some new ones, riding without any extra tubes is a little worrisome but since I haven't had any punctures yet and the towns are close together so I wouldn't have gotten into any serious trouble if a tube blew out to the point where I couldn't repair it.

One odd thing did happen today though: When riding past a enclosure of cows I noticed that a cow and calf had gotten on the wrong site of the fence. Not sure what to do I rode to the house that appeared to be connected to the enclosure and knocked on the door. Did that a couple of times with no answer. Figuring I had done pretty much what I could do I continued on my way, I hope it all ended happily with the cow and calf.

Day 18

Today I started getting into the forests of Småland, the marks left by the storm Gudrun were remarkable and the number of fallen trees seemed much larger here than what I saw on the west coast. In some places the layer of fallen trunks was much taller than me. Thankfully, the weather today was pretty nice in comparison, got some rain in the afternoon though.

While examining the map next to a fork in the road, a family rode by on their bikes. They were going in the same direction as me so I hooked up with them and we chatted for a while but we were rudely interrupted by a heavy downpour after about fifteen minutes. I wasn't very keen on waiting for them to put on their rain gear so we parted ways and I raced ahead to find cover and find some food.

Had two dog encounters during the day. The first one was with three very excited dogs, when passing a farm I heard a guy yelling for his dogs to come back and I saw them running across the field, when they started swarming around the bike, and I was sure they were just playing around, I stopped and petted them while the owner caught up. He wasn't very happy—to put it mildly—about them running off. I was able to continue on my way when the dogs, rather despondingly, started to trot back towards the farm under the supervision of the fuming owner. Just a little while after this I was met by another dog, this one was in "territory-protection" mode and barked up a storm, I kept my distance and could pass without any problems.

Day 17

Today I started my ride back home to Umeå, the day didn't start very well though: I wanted to add some air in the front tire but when I started pumping the valve separated from the tube causing an instant flat tire. Well, no big deal I thought since I had two spare tubes. I took one of them and after unfolding it I saw that the valve was of an incorrect type, very annoying, I took the other tube which thankfully had the right valve and I was able to load up the bike and be on my way.

The rest of the day was spent in intermittent rain and tailwind. Camped in a wooded area just before Glimåkra.

Enough rest already!

I have now finished my stay in the south of Sweden and my visit to Netherlands, tomorrow I begin my trip north. I never rode down to Netherlands, I took the bus instead. I would have preferred to go by bike but I had to do the smart thing since time and money is a bit tight. I'll have to do some bicycling around Europe some other time. Anyway, visiting the Netherlands and Bas van Gils was a lot of fun. I'll have to go back there someday.

The weather seems very unstable and according to the weather reports on tv it'll be raining quite a lot the next couple of days. Nevertheless I feel quite happy about getting going again.

Attached below are some of the photos I've taken since June 21st.

Day 16

Today I arrived to my moms apartment in Lund, thereby completing the first leg on my trip. I will stay here for a while before continuing to the Netherlands, I'm not entirely sure if I will make that trip by bicycle or not, have to think about it.

Todays ride was very nice, beautiful weather and pretty nice roads. I started to recognize the surroundings after I reached the town of Röstånga, after about 85km of riding. When I was a little kid we would occasionally go to the big market they hold there once per year. I therefore spent the rest of the ride in a sort of bliss and the hours and kilometers flew away with me hardly noticing them.

Rode past my sisters place on my way to Lund, chatted a bit with her and ate some strawberries then rode the remaining 14km in a very light rain.

Day 15

Today I continued on the Ginstleden bicycle route, with the occasional shortcut I made good progress. The road led through some very pretty landscapes and despite the long day I enjoyed myself. Found a nice camp site where I cooked dinner and then went to sleep.

Day 14

After a night of sliding around the sleeping mat, the ground slanted a bit more than I'm used to, I awoke early and ate some bread and bananas for breakfast. When getting out of the tent I noticed that the outer tent was full of insects and spiders. After chasing them out of there I was off toward Kungälv. Riding in the early morning is very nice, almost no cars and the air is nice and cool.

I passed Gothenburg during the day, the bicycle routes there were fairly easy to follow but I still managed to get a bit lost trying to get out. At one point I was riding around in a suburban area with a very claustrophopic feel to it. Wherever I went it looked the same, like some giant maze. Thankfully I was able to get out of there using my GPS receiver.

After Gothenburg I started following the marked bicycle route called Ginstleden which led me through some pretty areas, the bicycle/walking path next to the coast was very crowded though. On a nice day like this I suppose that's only natural.

Found a nice campsite on a hill next to a train track, the ground was fairly stony but there was a small area with only a few smaller stones. After clearing them out and doing some precision tent placement to avoid the larger stones I could relax for the rest of the evening. Unfortunately there weren't any shade where I had to put up the tent so the inside temperature quickly rose to about 35°C but the sun soon descended enough to let the tent cool off.

Distance: 120km | Ride time: 7:29 | Average speed: 16.25kph | Max speed: 52.9kph | Odometer: 1466km

Day 13

Another late start, around 10:00, but the road to Uddevalla was very nice and the wind was in my favor so I was soon trying to find my way out of the city center. It was a bit tricky but I eventually ended up on a good road going in the right direction. Just before entering Uddevalla I encountered an older couple out on a day trip and we chatted a bit.

Finding a camp site was very tricky, the area around Göta älv seems to be mostly farm land. Eventually I found a place to set up the tent, I'm not very happy about it at all but it will have to do.

Distance: 113km | Ride time: 6:55 | Average speed: 16.52kph | Max speed: 54kph | Odometer: 1346km
June 17, 2005

Day 12

The sky has been cloudy all day but the rain didn't start until lunchtime when I was close to Bengtsfors. I was starting to get quite sick of the rain and when it stopped at around 17:00 I started to look for a camp site. Found a really nice one after a short while, a grass field a hundred meters into the woods. The only problem was the abundance of slugs.

After getting the tent up and the gear unpacked I noticed that I couldn't find my bicycle computer, looked all over and eventually found it behind one of the bags. Really loosing it would be bad since I use it a lot, especially the trip counter which I use to keep track on how far the next town is.

Distance: 101km | Ride time: 6:15 | Average speed: 16.33kph | Max speed: 48.6kph | Odometer: 1233km
June 16, 2005

Day 11

My pen broke yesterday and I didn't get hold of another until I reached Arvika — I also ate a really nice pizza there.

I checked out from the camping just past 09:00 and the lady in the reception was curious about the trip and I showed her the route I had planned for the day. She pointed to a place along the route and said that I would have to work hard to get over the hill there. I thanked her for the heads up and went on my way. When I got to the place she had pointed out I came to the conclusion that it would indeed require quite a bit of work to get up the hill. I did eventually pass the crest though, had to stop twice to rest though. Going down the other side was crazy, steep and bumpy road.

Found a fairly nice place to camp just past Årjäng, many mosquitoes though which inspired me to put up the tent in record time.

Day 10

Woke up early this morning to the sound of loud snorting outside the tent. When I startlingly sat up, whatever it was rushed away, making a lot of noise as it went. I suppose it was an elk or something that happened to wander by my camp site.

After the rude awakening I lazily rode down to Torsby and the camping where I planned to spend the rest of the day. When I had arrived I felt really good though so I figured I'd continue to Sunne, about 35km away. So, that's what I did. On the way I passed a nice lookout spot where I took some photos and rested a bit after the long climb. I also passed a road constructon area where they only had one lane open at a time. It took me quite a while to come to the other side and by then there had formed a long line of cars and trucks waiting for me. I waved to the guy controlling the traffic and he waved back a bit and seemed somewhat amused by the whole thing.

When I was close to Sunne I was passed by another bicyclist, he had bags on his front wheel and a big backpack. Looked very uncomfortable. When he passed me he looked at all my bags and asked me if I was on my way to South Africa. I told him that I free camp and he sort of nodded and continued on.

I'm now sitting in the tent at a camping site in Sunne. I've just showered and washed my clothes. The clothes hang all over the tent and bicycle, I thought using the dryer was to expensive. Hand washed instead of using the washer for the same reason. Will go looking for some food now and then I'll check out the TV to see what they say about the weather.

Distance: 54km | Ride time: 3:17 | Average speed: 16.69kph | Max speed: 46.6kph | Odometer: 1013km
June 14, 2005

Day 9

A fairly cold morning so I didn't get started until 10:00. Had an uneventful ride to Malung where I bought some food. A lady walking past outside the store wondered about the amount of traffic on the roads I'd taken. Told her that traffic had generally been fairly light so far, even on the larger roads. Further south I'll probably have to take smaller roads though.

The rest of the day was quite hilly and I occasionally had a strong headwind, other than a small shower just after Malung it's been a nice day though with some sun and temperatures just below 20°C. Sometime during the afternoon I encountered an elk, it was standing next to the road and I didn't notice it until it started running into the forest.

Tomorrow I'll just ride down to Torsby and get a place in the camping site there. Going to wash my clothes and rest a bit.

Distance: 96km | Ride time: 5:48 | Average speed: 16.81kph | Max speed: 50.7kph | Odometer: 864km
June 13, 2005

Day 8

Due to the long day yesterday I thought I'd take it a bit easier today. I didn't start until close to ten o'clock when I continuted on to Orsa. After a while I came to a really nice downhill, coasted for about 10km. When I came to Orsa I thought I'd find a bike repair shop and let them have a look at the read derailer. Unfortunately the only such place I could find appeared to have closed down recently so I had to continue on to Mora.

A little while after arriving to Mora I happened to see the goal marker used for the historic Vasaloppet cross country ski race. Of course I just had to ride through it with my bike. I have some distance to go before I arrive at my goal though.

After some searching and help from a lady I found the bike shop where a guy was able to bend the derailer back a bit which made it work a better. It's not perfect but works well enough to continue.

The latter part of of the day was spent on road 45, very little traffic and a lot of nature made it a very enjoyable ride.

June 12, 2005

Day 7

Another day of cold and rain, this one contained a lot of hills as well. Fortunately the weather cleared up later in the day. I encountered another long distance cyclist today, he was coasting down the hill I was struggling up. We didn't stop to talk, only waved, shouted a hello and continued on our way. Had some trouble finding a camping site but I eventually found a fairly nice one. A very tiring day without much happening.

Distance: 126km | Ride time: 8:31 | Average speed: 14.89kph | Max speed: 56.3kph | Odometer: 768km

Day 6

I had a nice time at my uncle's and was able to recoup a lot of energy, yesterday we had a barbeque at a neighbour's place and I was kindly given two packs of freeze-dried meals. Each pack contains breakfast, lunch and dinner. I'm now sitting in the tent and have just finished a dinner one, it was incredibly tasty after a day like this.

I left at around 9:30 this morning just about when it started raining. Going straight south I made quite good progress despite the rain and cold, I saw a sign next to the road saying that the temperature was 4°C. The rain and cold mainly caused problems for my fingers, the winter gloves that I had brought with me turned out to be useless when wet. I was able to alleviate the problem by getting two small plastic bags that I put over my hands, this worked quite well after I had ripped a few holes in them to allow some air flow.

The biggest surprise of the day was when I encountered my first fellow long distance cyclist. I was riding on a road in the middle of the woods quite some distance from the nearest town when somebody on a bicycle came round a bend in front of me. We stopped to talk a bit and he explained that he was going from Malmö in the south to Hemavan in the north, a distance of about 1144km as the crow flies. He also told me that he had seen and spoken to a few other riders down south and it was nice to find out that there are other cyclists out there. It can be a bit lonely riding alone in this type of place. While we were standing there talking a few cars passed by and the people in them didn't seem to know what to think of the strange scene.

After the meeting I continued south and eventually found a very nice camp site near a river. The rain stopped about an hour or so before so I was able to pitch the tent in peace and quiet which of course is an advantage.

Distance: 121km | Ride time: 6:43 | Average speed: 18.13kph | Max speed: 46.2kph | Odometer: 642km
June 9, 2005

Day 5

Today I arrived at my uncle's place near Myrviken where I'll stay for two nights. I look forward to resting a bit, I feel a bit drained since I'm not very accustomed to riding a bike for so long every day.

Unfortunately the rear derailer seems to have gotten a bit bent, the drive train now makes some noise and the chain occasionally skips. I must have banged it into something during the day and it's quite annoying. I'll have to let some bike repair shop check it out.

I suspect that I'll choose a more southernly route from here. The weather is still cold and unpredictable enough that going into the mountainous region might be a bit risky, at least with my low-budget equipment. I'm also starting to get sick of the dirt roads (a few tens of km more dirt roads today) and I expect those are abuntant in the mountains.

Distance: 105km | Ride time: 7:24 | Average speed: 14.26kph | Max speed: 52.5kph | Odometer: 521km

Day 4

When I woke up this morning it was 2°C inside the tent, I decided quite rapidly to sleep for another hour. When I woke up the next time it was 5°C and I though that sleeping yet another hour would be a good idea. That turned out to be true since the next time I woke up it was a balmy 9°C inside the tent. Due to this I got a fairly late start, I got going at around 10:00.

Spent the day on road 87, riding on the larger roads typically works pretty well in the north of Sweden. They are generally quite wide and not very heavily trafficked. I did get a scare when I was going up a hill and over the crest came two cars in both lanes towards me. Some crazy person was doing an overtake in that dangerous place. Fortunately the road was wide enough for us all.

Camped just outside of Strömsnäs. Plenty of mosquitoes but the site was covered by a nice layer of moss which makes it very comfortable to sleep.

Distance: 102km | Ride time: 7:08 | Average speed: 14.3kph | Max speed: 43.3kph | Odometer: 416km
June 7, 2005

Day 3

A rough day, more than 40km on bad quality dirt roads. To make matters worse it hailed four times during the day. The first three times were very brief though and I barely managed to put on my rain gear before it stopped. The forth time it transformed into regular rain after a while and most of the ride on road 90 down to the city of Sollefteå was done in a steady drizzle. I was quite happy that they rain didn't happen while I was riding on the dirt road.

Following the directions of a guy I asked, I was able to find a nice westward way out of Sollefteå. Soon thereafter I found a nice camp site in a clearning in the forest some distance away from the road. Despite the tricky conditions it was a quite enjoyable day and I continue to be impressed with how well the bike handles the bad roads. I thought it was pretty nice to ride in the (light) hail, never done that before.

Distance: 87.6km | Ride time: 7:06 | Average speed: 12.44kph | Max speed: 46.1kph | Odometer: 314km
June 6, 2005

Day 2

I had some bad luck with the wind today, had to ride against a strong headwind for many hours. Very tiring. I also had to battle plenty of dirt roads, it's a bit unnerving to ride a heavily loaded bike on a road full of sharp stone and potholes.

Distance: 113km | Ride time: 7:53 | Average speed: 14.44kph | Max speed: 57.3kph | Odometer: 226km

Day 1

I was quite excited about getting going and the weather was ok, overcast sky but no rain. Of course, the moment I got on the bike it started raining. Fortunately I had rain gear with me and it seemed to work well, the weather got better after a few hours as well.

Just outside of Umeå I managed to make a left turn when I should have gone straight ahead which caused me to get a bit lost. That silly mishap caused me a 10-15 km detour.

I eventually got on the right track though and later in the day I found a nice camping site on a field just outside the village of Norrfors. In Norrfors I came across some nice people painting a house, we chatted a bit and they let me fill my water bottles. They asked about my route and seemed a bit impressed when I told them, I think they got a bit dubious when I mentioned that it was my first day though.

Just after getting the tent up I noticed a fox running after a low flying bird, it was very concentrated on the hunt and didn't notice that it was running closer and closer to me. When it was perhaps ten meters away it saw me and got quite frightened, it quickly turned around and rushed back into the forest.

Route Plan Done

I'm now pretty much finished with the route planning, I'll almost certainly not follow it exactly but it should be close enough. Some parts of the trip will be along marked bicycle routes, this is especially the case in Denmark, Germany and Netherlands where it might be a bit harder to find nice places to camp. Camping shouldn't be much of a problem in Sweden and Norway since you can pitch your tent in most places.

The image on the Tour2005 page will show the planned route and the route I actually take. I hope to update the image and this diary from time to time while on the road.
